The Goose Game of Sloterplas

2025
Het Ganzenspel van de Sloterplas

Collabration work made with Anastasija Diukova.
Inspired by conversations with neighbors around the biggest artificial lake Sloterplas in Amsterdam, this playful installation brings back the nostalgic Game of the Goose to the lived realities of Amsterdam Nieuw-West.

You are invited to explore the neighborhood as a city bird: searching for food, dodging dangers, and trying to build a safe nest.

But urban life is unpredictable! Humans feed you, chase you, leave trash, or ban you with signs. Sometimes they help, sometimes they scare you, sometimes they simply confuse you.

The game board itself is crafted from handmade ceramic tiles coated with Kaumera, a biopolymer derived from wastewater treatment in the Netherlands, with research support from Prof. dr. Yuemei Lin’s team at TU Delft.

This work grows out of Nesie Junyi Wang’s residency at Buurtwerkplaats Noorderhof, exploring how residents of Amsterdam Nieuw-West relate to the waterscape of the Sloterplas. The project is supported by VOICE, a Horizon Europe initiative fostering artist-led interventions for citizen engagement with environmental challenges, with mentorship from Waag Futurelab.
